Octopus Hat

Octopus Hat 1 I thought I would delve a little into what’s called Freeform Crochet…which is basically just crocheting whatever the h*ll you want without a pattern and calling it art. Okay, I Octopus Hat Back understand some of you may think this is indeed artistic but how can such a thing be functional and who the h*ll would wear it? On the runways maybe? Anywhere else? I doubt it! And if you don’t get what I’m saying, I’ve included a front, back and side view of this monstrosity…do you get it now? Good! Please…octopi don’t belong on our heads!! You’re even doing a disservice to the octopus…how embarassing for them to be confused for a hat!! How does anyone even confuse that idea? Oh, I know… Octopus Hat Side

Octopus…hmmmm, ya, let’s put it on my head…now how do I achieve that? Oh, I know, I’ll call it freeform crochet so people think it’s art…because you know, if I call it art, heck, they’ll never be the wiser!!

Can you believe this thing sells for $599 US???

My friend made that, although I didn’t come here through her, and I’m not even sure she’s aware that it exists. (No, no: I link to extremecraft and he linked to you.)

There’s only one of them; no worries about them proliferating on the landscape.
Yeah, it’s weird-looking, but I think that’s kind of the point.
She’s made other hats that either weren’t that weird-looking or were weird-but-cool. I’ll admit this one is an acquired taste, but I think I know what she was going for with it; a little bit ago she was really interested in old prints of obscure sea life, rare jellyfish and stuff like that. Also, while I don’t think I would wear that, she could pull it off.

If you were to open a gallery showing of this crap, would it be classified as a stuffy art show or a walking comedy tour?

I kind of like the idea behind this one. I don’t mind an octopus on my head, but this doesn’t even have the grace of an octopus’ limbs—too lumpy and awkward.

The first time I saw this hat it was like so many socks connected thru crochet. Ugh! What a mess! I’d really rather cover my nose whenever I see this. It looks like crap and for $599, this is definitely a hat for rich idiots.

The side view–Pharoah’s hat meets Medusa. Either that or she started a sweater, put on a third arm, and decided, “Well, as long as I’ve screwed it up, let’s see how many I can put on this thing!” Lastly, I don’t think any of Kelly’s snowboarder buds would spend more on a hat than the board they’re riding. Think of how many lift tickets you could buy for $600.

It could easily be a costume for a high-school or community-theatre production of “Elephant!”, the musical comedy based on “The Elephant Man.” Can’t you see Jeff Goldblum wearing this onstage at the end of “The Tall Guy?” Quelle David Merrick.

If that says “Voog” as in Ana Voog on the photo – yes, she did do a runway show as a matter of fact. She’s was also an 80’s singer….who was pretty new wave, and still is. Her clothes and hair match the freeform crochet things she makes. She’s got a HUGE following.

BTW, you still stink for spreading the myth that dogs don’t need to wear warm winter clothing in 10 degree weather.

To ANONYMOUS again…give it up!! It’s the DOG OWNER’s RESPONSIBILITY to take care of their dog…and suggesting a dog just throw on a coat in 10 degree weather is cruel and unusual punishment to that animal. How about coming out of the shadows before you make such comments??? It’s ridiculous to think posting as “Anonymous” means you can say “you stink” and run away again into the shadows. How about getting out there and telling those dog owners THEY STINK for taking breeds out in cold weather that were NOT meant to be in cold weather???!! I’m sorry but a coat ain’t enough if a dog isn’t meant to be in that kind of weather at all. DUH!

Once again Ana Voog threw up on me! First by her bloody tampon photos calling it art and now this creation. Lets just face it, if you put images of your p*ssy online you can put just about anything else on the interweb with a high price tag and call it art and actually sell it to bedroom ridden, keyboard dwelling, drooling mindless droids. This is a prime example of what I am talking about.

Anyone remember when she wanted everyone to buy her a condo?

Some freeform crochet is really incredible. But it has to be either funky, colorful, and usable (which means never, ever *clothes*) or made by someone with a lot of experience and very good taste.

This is just absurd. Bet it sells, too. Some people wouldn’t know art if it danced in front of them naked wearing Dobby’s tea cozy.

^This is a joke most people won’t get. If you *do* get it… you rawk!

When I first saw it, I was thinking I was seeing socks hanging from the hat. If you lost a sock, you’s always have a spare.
Maybe if you were Rastafarian, you could put your hair through those.
Oh and look the hat has to be tied on. You’s think with all that weight, it would stay on a head. Er, maybe it wants to get away. :% :%

If a real person wore it to a party, they would have to wear it the other way around … then that pink trunk like thingy would look like a trunk and they could pretend that it wasn’t really them wearing a stupid hat, it was a demented mutant elephant that found their invitiation and went to the party in their place …
I know they seem to put a huge price on this stuff … but I wonder … does anyone actually buy the stuff for that price?
btw .. it is just me, or does that dummy modelling it look a bit … deformed … like in that bottom photo – her head seems a bit far away from her pointy bits … and on that subject … why can we see her pointy bits – as if someone would be cold enough to put on a “nice” warm hat … and be stupid enough not to wear any clothing?! … oh yeah … I guess it is THAT hat we are talking about them wearing … I guess the model didn’t have any choice in the matter – she doesn’t have any arms to defend herself from it …

Just adding my .02 worth here. Freeform crochet can be beautiful and very artistic and wearable. Check out Prudence Mapstone, Jenny Dowde & Margaret Hubert just to name a few. I freeform, I also do crochet and knit, room for everything I say. And yes, I think the hat is ugly, but boy, wish I had that kind of following and was making $600 for every hat I made!

I love this one; and all of Ana’s designs. If it wasn’t so expencive i’d buy it, for sure. I love octopi and this is just so creative it’s awesome. I think it’s beautiful in its own right and is indeed a work of art.

And – some people don’t seem to know that the work of many major “past

past masters died in penury. However, their work now is worth millions.
So, perhaps the person who created this hat will have the last laugh on
all of us style and art mavens over here. 🙂 and the person who acquires
it for $600 will have a piece worth 50 times more in a few years time…

It is my view that people who truly appreciate art and crafting would
not post such vitriol about another’s work. There is such a thing as
constructive criticism, which can also be done with humour (as I gather
to be this blog poster’s goal). Slamming
others, in my view, is not productive. Just my two cents.

who say’s clothing has to be useable? I love this person’s work! It’s fun (is it possible to have fun????), funky, creative, diverse. And if I had the money I’d buy and WEAR it!

maybe she crocheted it as a sweater FOR her octopus?
(but the octopus saw it coming and slid out under the lid of the tank and crawled away … so she was left with a spare octopus sweater and nothing to put it in … until inspiration came and she put it on the dummy’s head 😉

btw … the more I look at that “trunk” … the more I think it actually looks a lot more like something else …

Not really a big fan of crocheting, knitting etc I just found this by searching for octopus hat and I have to say, i really like it.

In fact if it weren’t available I was thinking of making one by sowing a bunch of thrift store baby sweater sleeves onto a a ski mask but that’s just me…

I love the gorgeous forms of undersea life and think this is evocative and fun. Checked out her other hat designs and was WOWED-they are some of the most beautiful and innovative I’ve ever seen. I applaud her lack of fear or limits, and it’s strange to me that other artistic women would feel the need to bash creativity instead of simply clicking away from a page.
