What Not to Crochet

The Granny Square vs the Red Carpet

Posted by: SB&C on: September 18, 2009

Yes, we’re baaaaaaaack…..

I will apologise for the absence,  I could explain … but there’s a high chance you wouldn’t believe me.     To try and capture it – Some thought bubbles for you would include a wide choice of swear words in conjunction with colourful  descriptions of a horse who plays in fences and the word “Clear!” which you don’t really want to have to hear in conjunction with your mother….

Anyhoo…. As we are all conneiseurs connoisseurs and dilettantes of Crochet in all it’s forms, being somewhat united in our distaste of  the use of the Granny Square,  and usually uniformly appalled when Crochet is misused generally, I give you…..

One of Australia’s biggest stars !

You may remember this actor from such films as Lord of the Rings (all three), Pushing Tin (don’t blame you if didn’t see this one) The Talented Mr Ripley, The Aviator and of Course : Elizabeth (I and II – and Dear God, wasn’t Clive Owen gorgeous in that?)

Have you guessed who it is?

Yes.. it’s Cate Blanchett

cate-blanchett-sexy

And this morning in “a good for crochet in a-round-a-bout-way it made the front pages of all the papers today”

(cookie if you know what thats a quote from)

We have the question: is She Crazy ??

(not kidding, all the Australian papers are carrying this photo!)

So – Ladies and Gentlemen, popcorn eaters of all ages, I give you :

cate-blanchett

Yes or No???

Edited to ADD :  it’s a sign of how uncrocheted my life has been recently that I didn’t realise something important.

This is NOT the first time that the Blanket (if you’ll permit me – the CATE BLANKET) dress has appeared on What Not To Crochet.

NoooooooooooooooooooooooooO.

To all you fashionista, snobberista commentator blogs out there… We, at WNTC, got there FIRST

Way back.. during Fashion Week : I wondered whether being Naked in a Crowd was worse than wearing THIS

Hell NO! LOL What was she thinking!?

She is gorgeous – she is an example for all women of crochet. The granny square is back, it’s bold, its Blanchett!

I’m still scratching my head wondering…What the HELL was she thinking?

You’ve been missed!

I don’t even like granny square afghans, much less dresses. But Kate Blanchett is so beautiful, she can get away with anything. I’d say, ‘Just don’t try this at home’ !.

If anyone can wear a granny rug, and look good in it with a smile on her face – it has to be cate!

You have to admire the womans guts! I can see the funny side of this, taking the micky out of the red carpet, and the plasticity of the movie business. Onya Cate!

She must be burning up. The photographers in the background are in shorts. Imagine how hot that dress is. How heavy.

Dear Lord she’s wearing my grandmother’s afghan!

smaller squares would have been better.

I’d just like to know if she made it herself. It needs to go back on the bed or couch as a blanket, though

it takes balls to wear a dress consisting of granny squares and fun fur!

Oh No! That poor deluded young woman…….
I keep threatening my daughters that when I learn to crochet,I am going to make them an heirloom and it will have to be something from your wonderful blog……This is it! No more procrastination.
Mwaahahahaha

I’m sorry, I LOVE granny squares and this is so over the top! I think I need one!

She looks like she just hopped out of the shower and throw an old afghan over her. She looks absolutely gorgeous, but I think it’s definitely in spite of the dress.

Isn’t this the dress from the post “You ever have that dream where you’re naked in a crowd?” It really looks like it.

Just because you CAN
Doesn’t mean you SHOULD……………….

I just saw this in the news and thought to myself “She will have this on WNTC if she hits the enter button as her last effort this side of glory”. My next click brings me here to see if there’s been a new entry. Lo and Behold!! There’s ol’ Cate gorgeous beyond what should be lawful despite the granny squares. I could wrap myself in diamonds and furs and still not look that good. If I walked around in a granny square dress/afghan I’d be immediately committed into a mental hospital so YOU GO CATE! You’d look bitchin’ in a sack dress… but please, and I’m begging here, please don’t ever wear that god-awful thing again! Never tempt fate twice in the same manner.

As soon as I saw that dress, I thought, “That has to go up on WNTC!” I’m torn between laughter and the unholy urge to start crotceting again…

(Apparently she requested the dress from the designers, who got their granny to crocet it. Methinks the lady has a sense of humour…)

I LOVE it!!!!!!! And she can pull it off!

She should pull it off!

Okay either her grandmother made it,

she lost a bet,

or she owed someone a BIG favor.

Happy to have you back and thanks for the chuckles.

Cate Blanchet can wear whatever she wants and still look stunning. She has poise and elegance.

In a horribly, awful, only Cate Blanchett can do it, kind of way, I kind of like it. (whispering….. I don’t know why I said that)

I would have preferred it in smaller squares in coordinating colors and perhaps with something other than fun fur….I think I must be truly as crazy as my husband says, sigh.

As others have commented, Cate does indeed manage to wear this monstrosity and still look stunning. And I’m so glad she didn’t go with look the model had in the “naked in a crowd” post – I don’t think even Cate would look good with Oompa Loompa make up and curlers.

I really think the dress would look better if the granny squares were set up like diamonds instead of square. And what’s with the fur stuff on the bottom and sleeve? Glad it’s not me.

you know you are a jaded fashionista when you think…”Damn I look stunning in every piece of clothing ever made. It’s no longer a challenge. I think I’ll consult WNTC to see if there is anything on that site that I can wear that will piss off Mr Blackwell”

AAAGH MY EYES AAAGH AAAGH

oh also welcome back love :)

Oh yes -love it. Feel so much better now that i know beautiful doesnt mean you have taste…or is it all tongue in cheek???

This belongs to what I call the “fur bikini” school of fashion. Contradictory and unworkable on any practical level. What use is a nice warm afghan, if you leave one shoulder bare? Or what’s the use of a sleeveless, one-strapped summer dress, if you make it out of thick, warm granny squares?

She stole the blanket that drapes across my Grannies couch! And now she’s trying to pass it off as a dress. That fiend!

Let’s just take everything that give crochet a reaaaalllly bad name and stick it on a movie star………yeah, that’ll make it be okay!!! OMG!! Did she even look in a mirror?? I loath granny squares and this has just re-enforced my feelings towards them.

…urk.

The quote is from Evita :-)

I hope your mother is ok!

And obviously, Cate is going to be the spokesmodel for this new brand of Snuggly. It’ll be all the rage.

Evita? (Cookie?)

WTF!! There are beautiful crochet dresses that she could have chosen from but why oh why did she chose that.

Hi, I’m from Germany and I love your blog. I crocheted a cap for some jam jars and my boyfriend said it reminds him of a blog…which was yours. So I posted my caps on my blog and also some of your pictures.

I hope to see here a lot of funny crocheted things in the future. Keep it up.
Greetings from Germany,
Niki

I’m loving it – it’s just what I would choose to wear on a festive night out with the local paparazzi taking photographs of me! Of course I dwell near the Arctic Circle.

Fabulous!

I think the sleeve ate her hand….

It’s not in the same league as the bonkers Bjork swan frock, is it? Still, good effort Cate.

What I really hate is the fact she STILL looks good in the granny squares. Life just ain’t fair sometimes ….

Nooooooo! is right. She does look toasty warm (except for the one shoulder), but nooooo…

I actually have a couple of granny square sweaters that look quite nice – small squares, good color choices. I get lots of compliments on both, really.

This dress is a horror. Although I rather admire Cate’s cheekiness in wearing it.

Y’know… I’m not totally hating this! It should be shorter in the arm but other than that… I know it looks like an afghan, but there’s something about that I’m liking here!

We’ve all seen truly heinous fashion on red carpets – this is almost a relief! Besides, nothing can top the rope/twine/loofah/Brillo bikini.

I could not help but read that line in the voice of Antonio Bandaras singing Oh What a Circus. I created my first website when I was 13 to host the lyrics. Gotta love geo-cities.

hmmm – anyone ever see the movie called “The Fly”?
- this dress kind of looks like somebody’s mad uncle was experimenting with making a teleporter or whatever it was and needed something to put in it to test it out – and the nearest thing he could find was that old granny square blanket he could see lying on the couch, so he bundled it up and threw it in the hatch and flicked the switch … but little did he know that grandma’s poodle had been lying on the blanket and he had scooped that up with it … so this is what came out the other end – this dress!
… oh if I had the photoshop skills to draw the image I have in my mind – of the back of the dress – complete with all the bits of the rug and the tail/legs/etc bits of the poodle that can’t be seen from the front view – LOL

A lovely blog… a great idea! And this has to come out on the top of the pile of ‘what NOT to crochet’!!! The second time I’ve seen this monstrosity and I nearly fell off my chair when I saw it.

Cate can do no wrong, love love her. And the granny square’s pretty great too!
