Sock! Horror!
Socks.
Everyone who is doing yarny things, at present, seems to be doing socks.
Or - if you’re like me - hoarding sock yarn
The yarngoddess herself (yes, I mean YOU, Yarnharlot!) has been at the forefront of the sockiness of the YarnWorld.
Sock Monkeys.
Vine Socks (and they were lovely! ).
Socksocksocksocks.
Socks.
And Crochet has it’s share of socks - in keeping with the What not to crochet pledge and not to embarrass some of the sockers out there, I’ll only show this photo
as an example of crocheted socks.
Oh, and this one because I like the toeses …
This one, as well, because I have to ask the Question :
WTF do you want to wear Clear Plastic Boots???????
WHO *makes* Clear Plastic Boots? (!?!) (!!!?!!) (!!!!!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
*shiver*shudder*cringe*
Anyhoo…. Crocheted socks.
Mostly.. adorable…
Until you find that some twisted, sick, SICK, SICK (!) induhvidual has done THIS:
And you just know that someone is going to get given one for a gift…
Socks.
There is a point you have to stop.

I want clear plastic boots!!!!
Why NOT clear boots? Awesome way to show those socks off. Don’t know how available they are in Oz, but o/s I’ve heard you can get them.
hehe the clear plastic boots are obviously necessary to show off your awesome sparkley socks
I wonder which came first, the crocheted socks or the clear boots?
Ouch. I’ve worn crocheted socks, and the nubby-ness of crochet hurt my feet. I would say any crocheted sock is a WNTC, but I guess some people have less sensitive feet than me!
I just hope the clear boots have plenty of ventilation, because who wants to see condensation inside their boots?
Clear boots? WANT!!!
One of my closest friends has knit some gorgeous socks for me, and I could show them off well with said boots. I also have other pairs of wacky socks that would be great with those.
No, not everyone is crocheting socks. ICK! The whole ideal is ridiculous! Why spend $10 on special yarn and bobbles to makes socks when you can buy a pair of socks for about $1???? Same goes for the coin purse. Waste of time and materials. BTW: If my memory serves me right, wasn’t clear plastic shoes a fad of the 1980’s? And isn’t the 80’s OVER? What’s next? Ratted-up Big Hair and multi bangle bracelets? Again I say, ICK!!!!! One more shot before I go: Top pic with green and yellow socks: Shave your legs before modeling socks! ICK!!!!!!!!!!!
The sock purses look like a thinly veiled attempt to hide the fact that the creator has a severe case of Second Sock Syndrome.
Also, I secretely kinda want clear plastic boots.
I actually like the little sock change purse. LOL
I can’t say I was ever a silly sock person, or maybe it’s that I won’t say… no use owning up to it at my age. Hell, I made it this far without owning up to a bunch of stuff, why start now? But the sock purse thing has me standing up and cheering. I remember when my grandmother, a dear old thing who’d drink beer and shake her fist at the neighbors, would hide her money in her sock drawer. She’d fold the bills ever so carefully and put the precious roll of $1 bills deep inside a sock that would then be hidden in the furthest corner of the drawer underneath a stack of granny panties. I’m glad to see those days are over. Girls and boys… we don’t have to hide our money in the sock drawer anymore. All of you sock money people out there can now shout it to the rooftops… we’re out and we’re proud! We will no longer hide our sock money in drawers. We will crochet our darling little sock purses and we’ll carry them right out there in front of everybody. Look out world… sock money people are here to stay!
OMG I have totally gotten one of those sock change purses as a gift. Thanks so much for commenting on my blog!! I do have to say that I’d probably pass on the clear boots, but I am totally digging the flowered toe socks.
The coin socks are a copycat of actual retail items made for sale. I see sock coin purses (not handmade…or maybe sweatshop handmade, I dunno) made from toddler and baby socks in dollar stores and such. Not that I like them, just that a crocheter didn’t come up with them, but rather saw a solution for Second Sock Syndrome whilst shopping one day.
As for the clear boots, I own that book with that picture, and it drives me nuts that the authors didn’t provide shopping links. As near as I can tell, clear shoes are the only way anyone would ever see my loverly crocheted socks, if I were inclined to make any.
Socks take too long for me. By the time I’ve done all those stitches, I could have had a wearable item that isn’t hiding in my shoes, lol.
well i like the clear boots too but i dont have time to crochet socks lol, but on the sock purse yea its kinda cute in a way but it would be better in baby colors like a bootie or somithing ( well thats what it looks like to me lol) but give one as a gift @ the baby shower with all coins for that baby’s birth yr , its what we have done for our kids , yea i know a weird tradition but then dosent every family have them
oh yea as for the 80’s comeing back yea they are riped jeans are back in LOL now i can finally wear my ratty jeans i work in out in public and be considered trendy LOL
I like the little sock purses….the plastic boots, ahh, after wearing them all day, I’d have bury the socks and the boots…..
my older sister just asked me about crocheting a pair of socks for her. She has big feet & is diabetic & I’ve already one pair of comfy socks……
My feet are also sensitive to heavy or scratchy yarn, since it tends to leave imprints in my skin. In the winter I like wearing wool socks in my boots to work outside when it’s cold. If the yarn is very thick or rough, have to put on a softer cotton pair under the wool ones.
Clear boots, now there’s a revealing idea, for showing off talented sock making skills. My teen daughter might get a kick out of wearing them. It could be useful to have a pair of color changing shoes to match any colored outfit.
Is it a sock or a change purse? Looks like a mid-evil torture device or a way to clamp socks on kids who always lose theirs.
It’s not often that I have an actual physical reaction to a blog post but my body instinctually reeled back in horror at such a high rate of speed that I believe I have whiplash.
Horrible. Horrible. It’s just horrible. I need a cookie.
At first I thought you thought those little daisy-toed socks were fug. What a relief to realize that they were simply an introduction to a larger discussion of hand-made socks, and true fug. Those coin thingies are for dorks.
But as a knitter-infiltrator I cannot help but chuckle smugly at the naivete of some of the comments on homemade socks.
1. Hand-knit socks (or hand-crocheted socks made at a very small gauge) are 473% more comfortable than any socks you can buy. They’re tailored.
2. Why clear boots? So that people can see your socks, of course. They are available through numerous large yarn sellers, specifically for those who create and sport beautiful socks.
excellent post..
i am a huge sock fan…and i am known for adorninf funky socks with formals too…
i truly agree to what u got to say
