What Not to Crochet

Super Trendy?

Posted by: SB&C on: January 31, 2008

I’d say “Call me oldfashioned” (or… Ishmael.. your choice) because I don’t like hopping on every bandwagon that rolls by but this is supposedly vintage, and it’s making my fingers scritch, so there’s a Paradox happening.

HINT TO DESIGNERS : Vintage patterns do not always survive the rebirth process.

So – this is The Paradox:

Blue snow cape thing

It’s *ahem* Vintage. It’s… um.. in nice colours but it’s tripping the Fug-o-meter!

What is going on with a capelet that makes you look like you’re wearing a lamp shade???

And the cap thing? which is going to give the wearer the most ALMIGHTY case of helmet hair.

Repeat after me : Just because its quick and based (loosely) on a Vintage pattern, does NOT make it ok to crochet!

it’s ugly, plain and simple.

I do believe that this is the most comical pattern you have ever posted. I hope they payed that poor girl well to humiliate herself thusly.

Eh, the cap wouldn’t be so bad if it were a couple of rounds smaller and lost that fugly flower, but the capelet definitely has to go.

Ya know ya brought up a really good point , about the
‘rebirthing process’ and yea i can say this really does tip the fug meter, but I have to admit that I kinda find it a bit like cheating when ya take a pattern that has already been done and make it in todays colors. I see somany ppl getting rich off of this and frankly it makes me mad but ya know whateva LOL ,hmm maybe i should just join the bandwagon and search through my workbaskets and find somithing fast and turn that in to publish LOL … but I digress ya know this is kinda funny those same kinda hats were all the rage last yr even saw them in an avon catalog, but i could never see myself wearing them for the helmet head reason , and if ppl want me tomake things im picky cause i just cant make myself to make somithing that is so fug even if ppl are willing to pay LOL , ahh well I may be broke but i cant make myself a part of the fug trends , I beleve its up to us to stop the fug 1 person at a time .

I think it may be her head thats making the hat look funky. Maybe it just comes down too far or something, there is something off about it. It could be done better. I’m not too keen on the shoulder shrug thing either… not the most fugtastic thing I’ve seen though.

Hmm! Well, it might be OK if you were doing a high school play about the Roaring Twenties. It’s very, ahem, eye-catching! But I agree – I don’t think you’d want to wear it on the subway or to McDonald’s or anyplace like that.

I think this:

Is hideous in the same way.

It would be useless for even keeping anyone warm, as well as fugly.

Actually I’m so glad you posted this! I was wondering what the hell to wear to my next drunken bash, and it would really simplify things if I just showed up wearing the lampshade.

yuck.

The problem with this reimagining of the vintage 20s pattern is that the scale is all wrong. The capelet’s stitches are far too large, and the hat is too big. It looks like someone took a baby hat pattern and tried to make it a ladies hat. A 20s ladies hat needs a brim and should be worn back on the head a bit.

If I was Catholic, I’d cross myself and thank God that I am modest and not fashionable..instead I’ll just thank Him anyway. That’s not even vintage – it is just plain ugly!

How big was the hook they made the capelet thing with?! Ugh.

Mutant Dishcloths Gone Bad!

Oh my Lord.

Everything that’s said so far is true – plus, the model seems to be a wee bit old to be wearing something this… um… playful? Whimsical? Ok, just plain awful.

didn’t they just feature a capelet just like that one the front of the crochet today magazine? oh yup, sept/oct. (i just checked) i’m not sure which is worse, the one in the magazine or the one on here!

No, no, no, no, no. No. It’s all wrong. I am, in general, not a fan of 15cm hooks and superbulky yarn, and that capelet is the reason why.

The cape is ugly. But the cap is actually pretty chic, as long as you ditch the huge flower and push it a little back on her head, kinda like a cloche hat. Maybe she’s using it to cover up her unibrow or something?

Ahhhh! Giant shells!

I believe the item is made by the lady modeling it and she sells them or does or did for about $50.

I recognize who made this set. She does quite well actually.

Capelet. Awful. The yarn and stitches are too big. And the hat … it looks like it’s trying to eat her head! Quick! Get it off before it’s too late!

Well, really, most things out of the sixties were fugly, this is no exception. Yes, I said sixties. This is not from the twenties, I have patterns from then and they look nothing like this but the sixties stuff i have looks like this. Just in lime green and blinding orange.

Caplet – could work with less open spaces and a really chunky yarn

Hat – needs to be smaller and set back further on the head, like a juliet cap.

There, fixed.
