Too much Sweetness hurts my teeth!

At first glance, this is wonderfully romantic and sweet in a slightly twee sort of way.

too sweet dressThe little girl’s dress is utterly darling and the woman’s hairstyle is just to DIE FOR - I _love_ that “soft curl with ringlets round the face” look, *sigh* ….

but then, like any crocheter surfing on eBay,  I look more closely at the Aquamarine blue dress…

and it makes me feel like the time I ate those powdery After8 mints (hey - I was in the US for the first time in 12years and I regressed!) and my teeth ACHED for days…

I’m so back there!

First of all - the bodice makes her look quite saggy in the boob department. There’s a whole Alice in Wonderland trippish feel, not helped at all by the roses and the thing I keep coming back to is :

HOW HEAVY MUST THAT DRESS BE???

I mean - sport (4ply) or worsted (8ply) and that much of it? It would have to weigh a ton!

Even in thread - you’d be struggling to stand up!!!

And how long does it take to make???

The whole thing might work as a Dressing gown…. or robe sort of thing…

But!!!

It’s not fugly by a long way  but it’s got a pretty high “what not to” index!

  1. why do you think the model is sitting down;) the weight of the dress is holding her there.
I agree, it’s cute, but few women (or men for that matter) could pull off that particular look. A tad too cutesy for me, but that’s just me. your mileage may vary

  2. Why is the little girl’s dress so short? Was the pattern creator too tired to finish it after making that dress for herself?

  3. It looks itchy. I mean, i like yarn and texture, but used sparingly in everyday garments. Sweaters and hats are ok, but pants, dresses, and undies are just itchyfug.

Also, somebody needs to give that model a sammich. I don’t care if her hair is pretty. She doesn’t look like she could hold up one of those crocheted flower things, nevermind the whole outfit.

  4. Don’t go down the rabbit hole Alice! Wow, that really does look like it belongs in a fairy tale!

  5. It’s very cute and darling…in a barbie on top of a birthday cake sort of way lol. I agree, that must be why she’s sitting and not standing lol.

  6. I just found this blog and can’t stop laughing! Maybe the bodice doesn’t make her look saggy in the boob department. Maybe she IS saggy in the boob department! And is it just me, or does the little girl resemble Tom and Katie’s daughter, Suri?

  7. Once upon a time I made a long dress with some Red-Heart type yarn. It was a halter top originally, then I added a skirt to it.

The weight wasn’t too bad, in and of itself, however, the weight tended to s-t-r-e-t-c-h the dress, to a point that the waist dropped to hip level, and the skirt needed a few dozen rows (of dc) removed so I didn’t trip over it or have a train…. I think I may have worn it once before taking it all apart and making an afghan with it. I was actually underweight at the time, but it made me look pudgy….

  8. The dress reminds me of the dresses worn by the women in the original “stepford wives” movie -not the Nicole Kidman one, the old one. Frilly, overly prissy, way too fussy, way to feminine, and not in a good way. Anything with doilies on the skirt is a fug. I think the designer saw one of those crocheted toilet paper roll covers, the ones that look like a dress with the doll head on top and thought “I must make that for a full sized person!”

  9. Why does “The Stepford Wives” come to mind?

  10. But it really is cute. I think if it was knee-length and you got rid of the doilies, it would be pretty fabulous.

  11. No no no. Listen kids: Sweater dresses are in style this season, but those are cute and this is not the kind of sweater dress anybody should be wearing. Ever.

If you want a gown, use some pretty fabric. Do Not Crochet!

  12. That’s a dress? I thought she just had a matching lapghan or afghan. My baby is 15 months and I will not dress her in that, she is too young to be advertising her body.
