Unquestionably, a Waste of Yarn!

Yarn.

Yarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrn.

(hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhh)

We love it because it’s soft.

We rub it on our wrists.. on our faces.. (if you rub it anywhere else… don’t tell me please… )

In Stores, we stroke the skeins with envious eyes and consider how much you *really* need to spend on food this week.

We love to hoard it so nobody else can have it (snicker snicker!).

We wonder how hard it would be to have a sheep in the backyard, so we can have yarn on the hoof.

We love the unwoken potential that hides within the strands.. all twisted together, and ready to spring to life from a chain worked by flashing hooks.

So why in the name of Recoiling Tape Measures, do we waste the precious stuff on :

More cactus crochet

KRAP????

And what is it about Cactus and crochet?????????????

  1. for some insane reason, I was thinking about crocheted cacti this past weekend. Perhaps it’s because I have my live Christmas cacti in the same room (sunroom) the majority of my stash is in & I don’t want to interrupt their day/night cycle to look thru my stash. Plus it gives me an excuse to buy more yarn;)
crocheted cactus - at least you won’t be picking spikes from your fingers.
now since you seem to be on the same wave length as me (poor you!) how about some winning lottery numbers;)

  2. I think the second time I wanted salt and had to remove a cactus-shaped crocheted salt cover from the shaker, I would just burn the whole house down.

  3. No, no, no… this is NOT a waste of yarn. Here’s why…

it keeps the crazies busy so that they don’t sit around planning the destruction of the rest of us. Sure, the end result isn’t anything close to pretty, but it is an effective diversion tactic, and who knows how many lives it has saved.

  4. Okay, some things are cute for your kitchen and I have nothing against cactus’ in general but WHY do I need covers for my salt and pepper?? Waaaaaaaaaay too much time on someone’s hands…

  5. I am a born and raised soutwestern native, so to me these would be cute as toys. TOYS. Salt and pepper shakers, no. Sugar bowl cover, no again. Soy sauce bottle cover, kill me now. Don’t even get me started on the potholders. Everything else, ewww. Just to rant a little bit further, why of all things holy, would you put a ugly fake cactus in with lovely real cactus?

But on the bright side, dya know who buys this? Tourists. It is snowbird season. Maybe I should whip out some of these babies and sell it to them.

  6. but..but..but I like cactus. :(

I guess it’s definately a regional thing. I live with “prickly pear” cactus vs the Saguaro design here, and have crocheted cacti a time or two.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Pricklypearcrop.jpg - makes good jelly

Oh, but i would have to say to cover salt/pepper shaker cover IS silly, I would use them as Christmas Ornaments though! Too much work for the salt/pepper.

  7. PS. NICE over use of the “K” :)

  8. Well..it’s better than clowns. Bring on the 70’s catcus and lets have lunch…LOL

  9. I like cactus too, Texan. And last time I saw any, it was green. So why are all these cacti brown? Water shortage?

  10. Since I see these out my window everyday, I kind of like the kitch value of one in a pot. However, the kitchen set? Shudder.

And I think it’s that crochet really does make that nice ribbing for cacti.

  11. Maybe its the texture that makes them do it., i don’t know. what are those at the bottom, oven mitts?

  12. Wow. That’s got to be one special kitchen….

  13. I like them, but would modify the pattern as stuffed toys. Also, I’d crochet them in green. And put them in little terra cotta pots. Because I have a brown thumb, and these would be the only plants I couldn’t kill.

  14. [...] Just what I needed! Toyota has built a robot that plays the violin. Elsewhere, someone has — for reasons known only to them — made cactus out of yarn. [...]

  15. Those are cool! But then I’m always looking for tacky stuff to make and gift to my friends in order to see that special look of embarrassment in their faces… I have done a cactus on a toilet roll holder before ;-)
