Covering up

I understand that decorating your house is a matter of personal taste(unless you have cats and then usually you end up with those wonderful little things like mouse innards left behind a door that add so much SPICE to home decor that even the most queerest of Queer eyes couldnt come up with it) and serves to make functional items pretty or hide something that may be considered a little less than “noice”.

I understand that crocheting those little touches is a timehonoured tradition, evolving through long nights before there was electricity and even: TV and people actually had to SPEAK to one another and find their own amusements.

As an avid crocheter (yes - I am.. despite all those comments in the forums that seem to have other opinions)  I enjoy making many of the tchotkes that abound.

So, My subject for the day is Covers.

We’ve poked fun before at plate covers that used ALPACA(!!!) (!!!!!) (!!!!!!!!!!!!), Broomsticks covers, Clowns (*shivers*) and the over-use of Pineapples.

Living in the part of Australia I do,  where The Great Aussie Salute (brushing away of flies) is a part of everyday life - I can actually see a VALID point for the Jug covers .. and I have made them :) so I dont brand all kitschy things as “WNTC” automatically.

Anyway….

I went looking for some patterns today and found some gorgeous crocheted boxes that I’m itching to try.. and I found some things that raised my eyebrows heavenwards.

I think This is terrific:

Plastic bag holder I like that blue, I love the idea of recyling plastic bags.. and I can dig the whole concept.

The tea cosy:

Tea cosy in blue  Again - I’m still liking the blue… however the flower is weirding me out a little and I dont drink tea so I’ll skip it.

But then we find another cover.

And noting the raison d’etre behind TP Covers (cant have that sitting out, What Would People THINK???) and I think this is a blast :

susi tp cover  (See - I think this is funny - I wouldnt make it.. but I still think its funny!!)

I have to wonder…

What, in the NAME OF ALL BOOBY ISLAND BIRDS

does the Dishwashing Detergent have to be so ashamed of:

a cover for the dishwashing liquid

That you’d crochet it a little apron to hide behind????

  1. MY dish detergent has a FULL cotton dress that is hiding the unsightly bottle. :) well, I know it’s silly, but it was fun to do. This was when I first started to crochet, but I do still have it 6 years later, and made one for my moter, which she still uses. OH, its yellow and white.

Anyway, I agree, the sushi roll TP cover is fun. And the blue and yellow colors are just “yummy” together. This is the color of my kitchen, if you were interested.

  2. Oh my goodness, I want the pattern for the sushi toilet paper cover! Awesome!

  3. I have to say this one is definitely a matter of personal taste. I personally don’t have any desire of my own for a clothed dishwashing liquid bottle. lol

  4. I want to crochet a toilet shaped toilet paper cover…with some crocheted poo in the bowl. Just to see if I can do it. I’ll even put a little roll of toilet paper with a toilet shaped toilet paper cover on the tank. Again, just to see if I can do it.

  5. Ha ha ha! Thank you, the lead up to that last picture made it even funnier.

  6. for those of you who don’t know this link,
    http://www.myhq.com/public/c/r/crochetpoet/

has loads of loo roll covers in the toppers section as well as loads of soap bottle dresses…..scroll down and loose yourself for the whole day just clicking on links and revel in the glory that is crochet! :)

  7. Next time I go to Turkey I shall send you photos of what the Turkish ladies come up with for crocheting. My personal favorite is the crochet rolling pin cover. My lovely mother in law has a crochet doily (shaped like a fish!) on top of the toaster, table top grill and the kettle. There is a photo of it in my blog. No beating the Turks in crocheting things to cover the household things!

  8. Okay, I can’t honestly say I dig the detergent apron, but overall I have to say that positing this, no matter the subtext, is serious misfire.

    I want some damn fugs!

  9. Anonymous cracked me up *rotflmao*. The ultimate crochet challenge for expressing the strange ideas that blossom in the minds of the bored would be to dress a garabge dumpster. And even as I write this I wonder if there isn’t someone out there planning such a caper. :-D ))))

  10. I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder because I LIKE that tea pot cover, and the bag holder, and the dishsoap cover…..sushi is not my thing so I’d never make that , but the others? Yup, I would.

  11. I found the pattern for the sushi cover,

    http://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?projectID=806

but I would like the one for the bag dispenser? I really like the shape. All the other ones I’ve seen are sort of shaped like poops…

  12. I just wanted to say. . . . That I converted the TP Sushi cover into a cover for a square kleenex box. I left a hole in the middle of the sushi for the tissue, and would love to get pink tissue to come out of the red bit of sushi meat, but yeah. I did this for the tissue in my cubicle and so I would have something very personalized to me. I love sushi. If you want a pic of that, I can provide, as I don’t mind being laughed at. :)

  13. Scoff at that apron; however, in a pinch it’d make a good imprormptu panty liner when you discover you have none!

  14. Hi, can I ask where did you find the pattern for the tea cozy at?
    Thanks
    Penney
