Broom Cover

Need to “gussy up” your broom? Here’s the perfect little crochet accessory. I wonder how long it’d take to get the bright white yarn dirty? Oh right, what am I saying? Who cares … it’s to make the broom look purty … just ignore me for the obvious functional question.
You have to buy this pattern – it’s not even free and I’m sure nobody could figure out how to do it either – it looks so intricate.

Yeah, well, I suppose it’s ONE good way of making darned sure that that broom STAYS perfectly good, because you wouldn’t want to use it as long as this is around! Use this on the old straw broom, while the reality of it is that you’d use one of those plastic-bristled O’Cedar numbers for your REAL work. . .

I mean if one is going to make an outfit for a broom it should at the very least have a Halloween theme and come in basic black. If it’s not something I could wear as an accessory with little black witch boots with stiletto heels and mesh stockings with when I’m tricking and treating – what use would I have for it?
I can’t stop laughing at this frippery. Surely to gob the woman who thought it up was stuck in an icebound northern community for months on end, with nothing to do. I picture her having already made outfits for her 67 cats and maybe even few porch mice too.

Not to mention perfectly good yarn and money, MoonShine. This is utterly absurd. I can’t imagine who would want this, and why. What kind of neat freak would you have to be? And wouldn’t a neat freak keep their broom where nobody could see it, anyway?

Now THIS is Fug. Why on earth would anyone in their right mind waste time doing this ? Oh well, I guess this creation is a perfect match for the ultra white cheap and nasty acrylic used to make it.

You don’t help yourself or your comments by being a yarn snob, catsmum. And it would be an even worse fug if they had used a fancy, costly yarn, wouldn’t it? It would be an even bigger waste, especially on a cleaning item that would clearly get it very dirty. In other words, for a fug like this, they did, ironically, make the right yarn choice.

My only comment is that you must not know how to crochet if you think it looks too intricate to crochet. It’s done in a simple broomstick lace, with a chain stitch gathering. The shell stitches on the bottom is a beginners stitch-same with the flowers. And, NO, I didn’t make this.

Man, you guys are harsh, lol. I think half the point in posting a pattern is not just so somebody will know *how* to make that item, but to have the *idea* of making that item. Yeah, maybe you don’t need a pattern to do it, but I for one would never have thought of such until seeing this…
That being said, I have my own theory on “Why?” for a pattern like this, but I’ll keep it to myself.

What difference does it really make, what you make?! Who says it’s a law that all designs have to be current ones or else it’s “fug”, especially if it’s not crocheted. I personally think it looks good and who knows maybe someday I’ll make one of my own. After all it’s my decision and my place as to where it would be. Working with yarn is to be fun where it seems like it’s taken a bit farther than that.

LOL @ Anonymous – of course it’s entirely up to you whether you want to make something or not – just like it’s entirely up to anyone to decide if it’s fug and they don’t want to make it – a free world of opinion…which we’re all entitled to.

Hopefully any future Gramma-ness I may develop involves paying for groceries with handfuls of small change and putting bowls of mints in every room in the house instead of crocheting broom doilies.

This item is a traditional Nordic housewarming gift. In Nordic tradition, it is considered very bad luck to move dirt from one home to another. As a result, brooms, mops and other cleaning supplies are discarded when a household moves.
When she was still alive, every time I got a new apartment, my Swedish grandmother brought over a new broom as housewarming gift. And yes, they were generally decorated (my grandmother was partial to ribbons and fake flowers, but I’ve seen quite a variety of stuff)
It is not necessarily intended to be used ‘as is’, although it might be. I always had to pull the ‘goodies’ off after about a week of using the broom.

Geez….lighten up…sure, it is rather impractical…maybe yall should just use this for a stake to burn the person on?
And yeah, i make covers for the kleenex boxes…looks better than some the the ‘designer’ boxes they want us to pay extra for….silently i wait my turn to be burned…’at the broom-stake’

Being of norwegian decent, I never take an old broom to a new home. As the saying goes, “a new broom sweeps clean and an old broom knows all the corners” hence leaving the old broom behind and getting a new one for new place. Personally I never decorate my broom, and would only want one decorated with a little money as a house warming gift. LOL

It is also a pagan(Wiccan) idea that a broom should never be taken from an old residence to a new one. When I moved from my first apartment to a new one, I broke my old broom and threw it away, and bought a new one for the new home. I, however, do not decorate my brooms. But this seems like something my grandmother would like to use.

I like the idea of making a decorative cover for anything very mundane and ordinary especially if it tends to look worn quickly. This is a wonderful idea and if you are not too lazy or stupid ya could even remove it before sweeping then replace it when ya are done……ya think????? I liked the idea so much I created a few in christmas colors and added jingle bells to them and called it the Jingle Bells Broom Snood simply for joy and fun. My co-worker commented now she can tell if her son is really sweeping or just pretending to sweep and she can holler at him from upstairs if he quits too soon. Thank you for allowing me to experss my opinion I shall take my well earned place on the highest stake now…..

Hello,
My friend requested that I crochet her broom a cover because she wants to brush cobwebs off the ceiling with it, but keep the ceiling clean. A broom can get quite dirty. I use a Swiffer with a crocheted mop cover on it to wash my ceilings and walls, and I use it over and over again. It works great.
